As we head into 2026, AI is going to remain the refrain in a lot of the articles, podcasts, and videos you see popping up on your timeline (including this one, apparently.) It’s safe to say that AI no longer exists in a theoretical future; it’s here now in rehab therapy, and it’s already changing how clinics work, whether that’s in creating documentation or managing authorizations and billing.

For the skeptics out there, it’s important to note that the current state of AI in rehab therapy isn’t one in which the machines have taken over; rather, we’re seeing AI integrated into everyday workflows to ease the workload on overtaxed clinicians and staff by doing the things that take too long and take them away from focusing on patient care.  Ultimately, AI should augment your work — and we’re already seeing it pay dividends among adopters.

AI fits into what clinics are already doing.

Clinicians should rightly be concerned about any new technology that asks them to start doing something different or something more than what they already do, adding more work and stress instead of alleviating problems. If it’s going to be worth the time and effort to implement, AI needs to fit seamlessly into daily work, creating efficiency and helping clinicians and staff avoid fatigue and burnout. So, let’s look at how AI fits the bill.

It’s lightening the load for documentation.

It’s always dangerous to traffic in generalities, but it’s probably safe to say that clinicians aren’t big fans of documentation. Treating patients? That’s what they got into rehab therapy for, and what keeps them coming back despite all the challenges facing the profession — one of those being the hours required to write notes well into what should be their downtime.

That’s where we’re seeing AI-assistend documentation come into its own. With the right AI tool, patient conversations become notes in minutes instead of hours, and those hours that a clinician would have spent on notes can be spent taking care of patients. It’s not changing how clinicians are providing care; it’s simply doing the tedious work of translating that care into their EMR, with the added bonus of being able to find and flag potential errors a lot faster.

It’s helping with front office workflows—and catching issues earlier.

The frustration clinicians feel about all the documentation they have to do? That’s what front office staff are feeling about the barrage of eligibility checks, benefits verifications, and authorizations they’re dealing with on a daily basis. And if we’re being honest, these checks are tasks that should be automated in 2026. With AI as part of those workflows, front office teams are now able to more easily manage all of those processes as well as identify potential issues that could lead to denials earlier in the scheduling or intake process. And catching those problems sooner can help avoid costly delays later in the process.

It’s helping create cleaner claims on the first pass.

Speaking of later, billing teams are equally overworked to get claims out the door in order to get paid on time. The problem is often that critical errors are happening early in the billing process — see the aforementioned eligibility and authorization checks, or potential coding errors during documentation.  Here at WebPT, we’ve talked a lot about the “shift left” philosophy and how identifying issues early in the process is easier and saves considerable time and money in rework. With AI integrated into billing and RCM processes, clinics can shift the focus from reacting to denials to preventing them by identifying common risk factors before claims are submitted.

AI continues to evolve.

One thing that’s important to remember about AI in rehab therapy is that is that what we’re seeing isn’t a final product, but rather one step in a steady progression. It’s far from perfect now, but it’s performing at a high enough level that it’s serving as an invaluable assistant in a lot of clinics today. More importantly, practices that are integrating AI into their workflows now are positioning themselves to be able to take advantage of AI’s growing capabilities. AI will never be able to replace the team that makes a practice run, but it’s going to give those people the tools to manage the growing complexity of modern rehab therapy and keep clinics efficient and profitable.
