PHOENIX (June 15, 2018) — WebPT announced Katherine Ziemke as the winner of the 2018 BMS Practice Solutions Scholarship Award. A doctor of physical therapy (DPT) candidate at Staunton, Virginia-based Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences at Mary Baldwin University, Ziemke was selected to receive the annual scholarship based on academic merit and a video essay submission. BMS Practice Solutions began offering the scholarship in the spirit of supporting the future of the physical therapy (PT) profession. WebPT, which acquired BMS Practice Solutions in January 2018, carried on the tradition offering this $2,000 scholarship to an exemplary PT student.

“BMS created this award last year, and WebPT is proud to carry on the tradition and help support the next generation of physical therapists,” said Dr. Heidi Jannenga, co-founder and president of WebPT. “Today’s students are entering the rehab therapy profession at time of great change — in the PT space, specifically, as well as in the healthcare sector at large — and we must support them in not only navigating that increasingly complex environment, but also advocating for their rightful place as leaders and care coordinators. Investing in students and physical therapy education truly aligns with our mission of empowering the rehab therapy community to achieve greatness in practice.”

The theme for the 2018 scholarship application was the intersection of technology and health care in physical therapy. “We created this scholarship as an opportunity to support up-and-coming physical therapists who are the future of our industry,” said John Wallace, chief business development officer of revenue cycle management at WebPT. “As technology changes physical therapy practice, it’s important that WebPT contributes to educational advancement and provides opportunities for students to share their vision of the future.”

Each applicant submitted a video essay explaining his or her vision for how technology and digital tools will assist in providing better patient evaluations, treatment and education. In her winning video submission, Ziemke said, “Technology and health care are an important partnership in increasing the radius of patient care, quality of patient education and tools at our disposal to increase the outcomes and quality of life for the people we serve.”

Future scholarship opportunities for DPT students will be available from WebPT Foundation in January 2019.
