I don’t know about you, but I love the power of a meaningful quote: it can be interpreted in many ways, and it offers new insights every time you read it. That’s why, when I was at Ascend, I couldn’t help but think of some of my favorite quotes. And it’s these three in particular that perfectly frame my experience and represent my hopes for the future of our profession:
It’s September, which means the weather’s cooling down, pumpkin-flavored everything is now available, and students—including future physical therapists—are heading back to school. If you’re in PT school right now, then this letter goes out to you, because the industry that you’re about to step into isn’t your grandparents’. It’s not even your parents’.
For practicing PTs, physical therapy continuing education courses (CEUs) are a fact of life. After all, most states require PTs to complete a certain number of CEUs each year in order to retain a license to practice. But just because these courses are mandatory doesn’t mean they also have to be a drag.
I can’t believe it’s already July. Seriously, as fast as this year’s moving, it won’t be long before I don a pair of cozy candy-cane socks and start bustin’ out my best cookie recipes. And what’s more exciting than the thought of eating holiday cookies? Nothing, really. But, a close second is the thought of attending some of the physical therapy industry’s best conferences.
Bottom line not where it should be? You could be suffering from one of these sneaky budget sucks.
Managing a practice isn’t easy, and it’s natural to be overwhelmed by the pressure to cut costs and boost your bottom line. What I learned in my experience as a multi-clinic director, though, is that it’s actually possible to improve your cash flow without resorting to trimming expenses. I’m not saying it won’t be challenging; but, it is doable.

We’re all for helping physical therapists create and retain loyal customers. After all, improving patient retention is one of the absolute best ways to grow your business. As a therapist, you care about your patients (thank you, captain obvious). But it’s this helpful nature that’s often responsible for stress, frustration, and even career burnout. Additionally, you might feel like you have to constantly fill the “therapist” role, even when you’re not in the clinic. Plus, you’re under pressure to answer tons of questions thrown your way on a daily basis from your techs, patients, and even front office staff. And that’s just what you face while at work. As you walk through your front door after a 10-hour day, getting asked “What’s for dinner?” might just be enough to send your mind into a frenzied state. Spaghetti or takeout? Nobody knows.
Understandably, it’s hard to stay mentally—and physically—refreshed while working in such a demanding profession, and it’s definitely not for lack of caring about your job, family, or patients. In fact, it’s the opposite. But if you’re feeling drained from working long hours and constantly running over your list of to-dos, here are some things you can do to remedy burnout:
Networking, welcome parties, and complimentary food (and drink tickets) are nice, but conferences can run a pretty penny—anywhere from $100 to upwards of $1500 per attendee, depending on the size of the event and the caliber of the speakers. Before shelling out any of your hard-earned money to attend or sponsor an event of this kind, you’ll need to make sure it’s worth the investment of your time and money.
In some social circles, shopping is considered a sport. In others, it’s merely an obligation or simply a pastime. But when it comes to shopping for continuing education units (CEUs), one point most social circles can agree on is that determining the right educational courses is far more important than say, the quest for the perfect pump. That’s because—in most states—earning the right CEUs is mandatory in order to maintain your license.
