Company culture can be a tough thing to define. After all, it’s a set of values, beliefs, and styles shared, felt, and propagated by each and every staff member. Ideally, it’s something that develops organically based on the mix of people and personalities present in your office. But as companies grow and change, it’s easy for that founding culture to get lost in the shuffle. So, when WebPT started growing, we knew it was important to preserve the culture that had played such an integral role in our early successes.

To sustain our culture, we first had to tackle the tricky task of defining it. (For some helpful tips on how to approach this process in your own business, check out this post.) For us, it all started with a massive company brainstorming session of the characteristics WebPT employees considered most important when it came to their work environment. First, we filled an entire whiteboard with words and terms we associated with our culture. Then we then boiled all of that down into our original six culture commitments. (Recently, we added two more for a grand total of eight.) These are the values that define our company—the oil that keeps all of our gears in sync and moving smoothly, so to speak. We hold each other accountable for adhering to these core tenets, and when we bring new people aboard the WebPT ship, it’s because they are rockstars not only at their jobs, but also in demonstrating the following traits:

1. Service: Create Raving Fans

Here at WebPT, we’ve all got different roles to fill, but we’re united under one overall mission: empowering our Members to achieve greatness in therapy practice. How? Aside from providing business and documentation solutions in the form of a stellar product, we also strive to provide stellar support. We want our Members to succeed, which is why we’re so committed to listening attentively to their questions and concerns and doing our darndest to supply answers.

2. Accountability: F Up; Own Up

We’re humans, not robots—which means mistakes are bound to happen. And, as this Entrepreneur article argues, it’s okay—and sometimes even beneficial—to have an occasional “oops” moment, as long as we own up to it, fix it, and learn from it. What’s not okay is passing bucks, pointing fingers, or covering you-know-whats. That only gets in the way of providing the best possible service to our Members.

3. Attitude: Possess True Grit

You won’t find any Negative Nancies or Pessimist Peters walking the halls at WebPT. Because even when things don’t go according to plan, we maintain the passion, determination, and can-do attitude necessary to right the ship and get things back on course. So come hell or high water, our Members can always trust us to be there for them.

4. Personality: Be Minty

Think back to those old Mentos commercials. Remember how happy and smiley everyone was? That’s the sort of atmosphere we want at WebPT (minus the ’90s cheese factor). We’re all about spirit, spunk, and collaboration—and of course, fresh breath never hurts. That kind of energy is contagious, and we know our Members appreciate our service-with-a-smile approach.

5. Work Ethic: Be Rock Solid

We definitely value hard work. More than that, though, we value smart work—work that is innovative, creative, and brilliant. Challenges? We accept ’em. Plans? We follow ’em. Deadlines? We meet ’em. End of story.

6. Community Outreach: Give Back

We know how fortunate we are to be in the position to give back, and that’s why we make it a point to pay it forward. Whether it’sdonating, volunteering, fundraising, or mentoring, we encourage all of our staff members to get involved in their communities.

7. Resource Efficiency: Do Más With Menos

WebPT started lean—with three employees in the back room of a coffee shop—and we never want to lose touch with our bootstrapped roots. It’s that scrappiness—that resourceful nature—that allowed us to expand honestly and efficiently. We make the most of what we’ve got and hold tight to the “waste not, want not” way of thinking.

8. Health and Wellness: Live Better

Rehab therapy is all about improving quality of life, and so are we. That’s why we encourage our employees to make healthy choices for their minds, bodies, and souls. After all, truly reaching your potential—both personally and professionally—starts with taking care of yourself and one another. Whether it’s exercising more, eating a more healthful diet, or taking more quiet time for yourself and your mind, it’s important to be proactive in your own well-being.

There you have it: a crash-course in WebPT culture. Remember, we didn’t develop these tenets overnight; as Heidi explains in this month’s founder letter, we spent a good amount of time identifying and fine-tuning them. But in doing so, we’ve laid a foundation to build on for years to come.
