Paul J. Meyer, entrepreneur and author, once said "communication—the human connection—is the key to personal… success." While Meyer probably wasn’t referring to the efficacy of speech-language pathology and audiology, it would seem that the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) agrees with his sentiment. Each May, in honor of Better Hearing and Speech Month, ASHA selects a theme to generate discussion around the SLP and audiology community. This year, that theme is “Communication: The Key to Connection,” and ASHA is providing a wealth of activities and resources to help everyone celebrate the speech and hearing industries all month long.

Let’s Talk Turkey: How Schedule-Stuffing Affects Patient Experience

I’ve got a confession to make: I’m one of those people who bust out the pumpkin spice and fall decor on September 1. This might be a product of my Midwestern roots (apple-picking and corn mazes, anyone?), or it could be the result of living in Arizona, where autumn is more of a state of mind than an actual shift in season. So, it’s no wonder that Thanksgiving is one of the holidays I look forward to …

    Wallpaper: Move. Restore. Revive.

It’s officially summer—and that means ’tis the season for movement. Across the country, people young and old are lacing up their hiking boots, pumping up their bike tires, and packing their beach bags. But for some folks, musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction stand in the way of summer fun—which means this is also the season to celebrate the amazing work rehab therapists do to help get people back to the warm-weather activities they love. In that spirit, we’ve …

Hole in the Hull: Can One Bad Review Sink Your Practice's Reputation?

Let’s face it: little problems, when left ignored, can quickly turn into really, really big problems. Anyone who’s dealt with a leaky set of pipes can attest to that. These little leaks start off innocuous enough—an occasional drip is nothing a well-placed bucket can’t solve. However, if you fail to address the underlying issue, you could find yourself in a lot of hot water—literally. Much like leaks in your plumbing, negative reviews of your rehab therapy practice …

Happy Better Hearing and Speech Month!

In Phoenix, the weather is warm, pool parties are already in full effect, and it’s been shorts season since—well—last summer. But whether it’s sunny where you are—or not—the month of May is about more than changing seasons. This month is a celebration of Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM). Each year, the Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) chooses a theme to promote awareness surrounding hearing and speech problems. This year’s theme is "Early Intervention Counts." Early intervention is a …

FAQ: Make Google Do It: How to Use the Internet to Win More Patients

Earlier this week, Heidi Jannenga, PT, DPT, ATC, and Scott Hebert, PT, DPT, hosted a webinar that dove into the depths of digital marketing in the age of the almighty Internet. Though they covered a lot of ground, they weren’t able to address all the questions that filtered in during the hour-long presentation . So, we took it upon ourselves to compile (and answer!) the most commonly-asked questions of the bunch! Don’t see the answer to your …

Spooky, Scary, or Just Plain Fun: Halloween Traditions Across Our Community

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always loved Halloween. Sure, I’ve been a cat more times than I can count—not the most original or frightening costume, to be certain—but there’s just something exhilarating about donning a mask (or face makeup in my case) and exploring the things that go bump in the night. After all, the ancient Celts—who celebrated Samhain, what The History Channel credits as the “ancient origins of Halloween”—believed that on October 31, “the …

The Ultimate ICD-10 FAQ: Part Deux

Just when we thought we’d gotten every ICD-10 question under the sun, we got, well, more questions. Like, a lot more. But, we take that as a good sign, because like a scrappy reporter trying to get to the bottom of a big story, our audience of blog readers and webinar attendees aren’t afraid to ask the tough questions—which means they’re serious about preparing themselves for the changes ahead. And we’re equally serious about providing them with …
