In honor of that sentiment, the theme last month, which was Physical Therapy Month, was “Physical Therapy: It's all About Movement.”

Physical therapists are regarded as “movement experts.” They use their knowledge, skills and experience to help people take control of the movement that is critical to their lives. These health care professionals diagnose and treat individuals of all ages with medical problems or health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives. They examine each individual and develop a plan of care using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function and prevent disability. They also work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility by developing fitness and wellness programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.

"Movement is important in preventing problems of physical functioning as we age," said Leonard Suel, director of Avera St. Luke's Physical Therapy. “Research has shown that strength can be maintained with exercise as we age, and that flexibility and balance can be improved with appropriate activities.”
