The Ottawa Hospital and Canadian military are joining forces to make physical and mental rehabilitation for patients a virtual reality.
The first of its kind in Canada, a CAREN multi-sensory system will soon be in place at the hospital's rehabilitation centre.
CAREN stands for computer assisted rehabilitation environments. The virtual reality simulator will provide physical and mental therapy for patients in a safe and secure environment. It will help patients deal with things such as balance issues and post-traumatic stress disorder, and will be of use primarily for soldiers returning home after suffering injuries. The system will also be available for civilian patients at the centre.
