How Can the iPad Help PTs?

As we start a new year and a new decade, many of us want to start fresh with something that can improve our lives. 2011 has the potential for some game changing technological innovations in healthcare.

In April 2010, Apple released the iPad, which has taken the world by storm. More importantly it has given healthcare professionals mobility, easy access to web-based EMR, real time data access and a more interactive method of patient education. It is not the answer for everything, but it is a great tool that is less intimidating to patients than a laptop or computer.

PTs have embraced the iPad with enthusiasm. One of the most common questions that we get at WebPT is "Can I complete my documentation on the iPad?" Approximately 20% of WebPT users have iPads in their clinics as the point of service tool of choice. There are different opinions on how much the iPad can really impact healthcare, but the iPad and other tablet computers are already becoming very practical and useful.

Here are the three main benefits of the iPad for for therapy clinical care:

1. Accessing your EMR and billing capabilities from anywhere, anytime with real-time updates to the medical record
Mobility
in our profession is key. Using a secure wireless connection within your clinic, the iPad can be used to document exercises in the gym, using the digital flowsheet just like the paper one most of us have been using, for point of service documentation of objective findings and direct interaction with the patient for outcome measurement tool completion. The iPad's recognizable image lends to credibility, iPad is less intimidating than a larger netbook/laptop, and allows for more maintained eye contact with the patient.Real time note taking abilities for more accurate billing potential

2. Faster access to medical literature and research to allow for improved patient education immediately during point of service care
The iPad can be used to teach patients. Multimedia resources such as patient videos, animations, diagrams, charts, etc. can be shown onscreen to teach patients about specific diseases and conditions. Medical apps are becoming more readily available for such services as: goniometry, anatomical viewing, exercise programs, surgical procedures, and more.Games. Do you treat children? There are many games available to assist with balance, hand-eye coordination, speech, etc.

3. Affordability and portability for widespread access without requiring excessive IT support.
The iPad is small, weighs less that a pound, and is fully mobile resource. It now costs $500 or more, but prices on iPads and tablets from other companies will be dropping quickly. Extended battery life of more than 10 hours allows for use throughout a full day of treating patients.

WebPT is dedicating this month to education about the iPad and mobile technologies for physical therapists in a clinical setting. Please continue to visit our website for weekly blogs and news regarding the iPad and other tablets.

The great thing about the iPad is it's portability and ease of use. I can see this soon as the direction clinics, hospital departments, and even home health care will be heading.

Hey guys, been using the iPad for 2 months now. Works great for daily notes, but is awful for initial evaluations. WebPT just seems to crash the browser when trying to load profiles in the observation portion of the eval. It is also almost impossible to finish an incomplete eval because it never loads, just locks up the iPad. Ayone having similar experiences?
P.S. I am now using the faster ipad2 and the problem is still there.

We have the same problem in our clinic, we use a secured network connection.
WebPT logs us out/freezes when we load IE's quite frequently, occasional freezing with progress notes/discharge notes, rarely with daily notes.
When I spoke with WebPT earlier this year Mr. Windandy/customer service/tech service I was told that optimizing WebPT for the iPad was something they were working on. I have not really noticed any improvement with WebPT on the ipad since then.
I don't feel like the iPad should have been marketed as suitable electronic device for WebPT as it cannot load IE's (even on your iPad information page you say how great it is to use the iPad in treatment room with patient because you can enter the data instantly and have the tests right in front of you).
We have tried varying configurations of our network to attempt to improve connection but non make a difference (varied security levels)

Funny thing is I bought our staff all iPads on WebPT's recommendation to use an iPad vs a tablet laptop.

Thanks for the feedback. Are using a Wi-Fi enabled device or are you using a 3G connection through a Cell Phone Provider?

I am a Pediatric Physical Therapist in the School system and work with Birth to 21 year old students. Most of my caseload is at the younger end. How could I best utilize an iPad while working with my students? I am looking more for motor activities such as FitDeck apps or Core strength like Yoga poses, Pilates, even apps for birth to 3 age group when I am working on positioning for half kneel or standing (for educational activities which I am sure are endless). I of course could use the camera and picture options for data collection for progress. Any other ideas?

I love the ease and efficiency of the IPad with WebPt. Apps such as ICD9 and Medscape are indispensable. I have also started using the penultimate app with a stylus to jot down notes during evaluations. Nothing is easier than an IPad to carry around with you in the clinic.

Good Morning Heidi,
I have been thinking about a change to the iPad. Since some of your users already have it in place maybe you could give me some input on GB size. My netbook has windows updates frequently and believe it or not, it has used up most of my tiny hard drive. I am wondering if I get the lower GB 3G iPad if this will also occur or if I should get the highest GB available. Any feedback?
Thanks,

Hello Ann,

You should be fine with the lowest size of the iPad since all of your information can be stored and transmitted through WebPT. Refer to our buying guide on our blog for further explanation. Ultimately, it is going to depend on the needs of your clinic. If you plan on storing lots of external files on your iPad you may need to upgrade. Keep an eye out for our recorded iPad webinar to be uploaded to the resource center. Thanks for your inquiry.

I am a PT and have 5 PT's and use WebPT and an Ipad and the main complaint I have is you have not fixed the preview of the evaluation or progress report to work on the IPad. Its been over a month and quite a pain to have to finalize the document and then make addendums. It has made me want to look into another software for documentation as it is a major pain.
I hope you fix this soon.

Randy -

Our update last night fixed the issue with preview, so now this should be working fine. Sorry for your inconvenience as we caught up to the recent OS change from Apple that caused the issue.

WebPT Support

Hi Randy,

I appreciate your use of WebPT and can assure that we are working diligently on this issue.

Apple released a new iPad operating system in January which opened up some new capabilities but unfortunately, Apple does not release the nature of their updates until the day that it is delivered to its end users. I hope you understand that the ways in which Apple chooses to create their operating system is outside of our control. We are aware of the problem and hope to have it solved as soon as possible. WebPT has a commitment to embracing all emerging technology, especially those that have as great an impact on the healthcare realm as the iPad. Thank you for you patience in this matter and your continued support of WebPT.

p.s. if you have Steve Job's cell number I can log a complaint for both of us. ;-)
