May is finally here, and that makes all of us here at WebPT super stoked. Why? Well, the sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and of course, it’s Better Hearing and Speech Month!
The tradition of Better Hearing and Speech Month began more than 75 years ago as a way to shed light on the many forms of communication disorders and impairments affecting human hearing, speech, language, and voice. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders estimates that approximately 43 million people in the United States live with some kind of speech, voice, language, or hearing impairment.
Here are a few more figures to consider:
- About two to three out of every 1,000 children in the US are born deaf or hard-of-hearing. Nine out of every ten children who are born deaf have parents with normal hearing function.
- More than three million Americans stutter, with the highest incidence occurring among boys ages two through six.
- An estimated one million people in the US have aphasia, a language disorder resulting from post-stroke brain damage.
- Approximately 36 million American adults report some degree of hearing loss, yet only one out of five people who could benefit from a hearing aid actually uses one.

Today marks the beginning of Occupational Therapy Month—and that’s no April Fool’s joke—so we wanted to share with you a special message to all OTs from Alex Zarazua, WebPT’s Support Team Lead (and the newest addition to the WebPT Product Team).
Alex Z, WebPT Support Team Leader, thanks OT's for being awesome from WebPT on Vimeo.
Looking for more information about this month of OT appreciation? Check out the American Occupational Therapy Association's website and follow #OTMonth on Twitter. This way you’ll be totally hip on all the ways you can help promote occupational therapy in your community. And don’t forget to check back here often—along with everything you’ll need to take your practice for a walk on the green side (for Earth Day!), you’ll find posts on finding and marketing your OT niche, iPad use in the OT clinic, and apps for pediatric OT clinics.

Today’s blog post comes WebPT President and CTO Brad Jannenga

Earlier this month, I packed my bags and headed off to Washington DC along with Courtney Klein Johnson and Chris Petroff, founders of social incubator and fellow Phoenix tech startup, SeedSpot. Why were we heading to our nation’s capitol? Aside from wanting to see the famed cherry blossoms bloom, we were invited to take part in Startup America’s Champions Take DC event. Packed with amazing dialogue, brilliant insights, and lots of awesome people, the experience was a lot of things—exciting, educational, inspirational—but most of all extremely humbling.
Here are my top four most awe-inspiring moments: -

#SolvePT’s Tuesday night Twitter chat on January 8, 2013, focused on the topic of trade shows and conferences—specifically how to get the most out of them. With CSM 2013 next week in sunny San Diego, it was definitely a timely discussion. So, how do you get the most out of conferences? Here are five tips:- Be selective. There are local, regional, national, and even international conferences and events, spanning a plethora of topics from specific private practice physical therapy to general health care. While trade show after parties can be pretty rockin’, and a change of scenery is always nice, you and your practice don’t need to attend everything. Conferences aren’t Pokemon, after all, so be selective.
Choose the shows that are most relevant and will prove most educational. Additionally, not everyone from one practice can all drop everything and attend the same shows. Consider researching local and regional shows that may provide similar education and training as national events and then enacting a rotation plan for large-scale shows.

Last week WebPT descended upon Las Vegas for PPS 2012, ready to talk EMR, technology, cloud computing, marketing, social media, and all things PT. In addition to rocking one of the coolest booths on the tradeshow floor, we thoroughly enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces and befriending new folks, too. Our After Party was a huge hit, and Brad and Heidi got a lot of great questions at their "Taking Your Practice Into the Cloud" presentation. Visit our Facebook page to view photos from PPS 2012.

Paper documentation ain’t warm and fuzzy with rainbows and sunshine. It’s cumbersome and bang-your-head-against-a-wall frustrating. That’s why we want you to get real with your documentation. Ditch the pen and paper and get WebPT, the ultimate EMR solution for rehab therapists.
Visit us at PPS on October 25th and 26th (booth 525–527) at Wynn Las Vegas to learn more. While you’re at our booth, snag a free shirt, get your photo taken, and let us upload your pic to DocumentationSucks.com for your chance to win a MacBook Air. In addition to all the contest fun, we’ll also be demoing our user-friendly, fast, and mobile documentation solution.
While paper documentation surely sucks, parties don’t. After carousing on the tradeshow floor, join WebPT for the PPS After Party. We’re talking free drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and plenty of mingling, all from the luxurious Encore at Wynn.
